(Non)human Community.
Exhibition of the Frakcja group of women artists
Fotofestiwal 2022, Łódź
When I typed the word "community" into a search engine, the first images that appeared were of clasped hands among a few people. These images often directed users to various types of community websites, such as those for Christian or residential groups. Notably, I found that the same stock photo was frequently displayed across different sites and in different contexts.
Curious about these results, I began browsing the websites associated with various communities and analyzing the photographs that represented "community." I noticed that many of the images did not depict actual communities or their gatherings and activities; rather, they were stock photos.
I collected around 130 images related to the concept of community and similar ideas, most of which showcased various arrangements of different people’s hands. Interestingly, several of these images were repetitive in design. Some photographs were slightly altered versions of the same image, while others were distinctly different but still very similar in their visual gestures. At times, I couldn't determine whether groups of people had gathered to pose for a photo or if they were photomontages. This leads to the question: to what extent do these visual representations connect to a specific community? Are they genuine traces or documents of real communities, or are they simulacra that conceal the fact that such communities may not actually exist?
Anyone can use stock photos to illustrate their ideas and concepts, including themes like "community," "friendship," "cooperation," and "support." I invite you to explore the visual repertoire that the Internet offers in this domain.
