Mermaid and the Warrior

video

The video work was inspired by two monuments in Ustka - the Dying Warrior funded by the pre-war inhabitants of Stolpmünde, which can be found in the park close to the Eastern Beach in Ustka, and the Mermaid, financed by the inhabitants of post-war Ustka. The Mermaid is the highlight of the coastal promenade.

The distance between both monuments is defined by 850 meters, 90 years between the creation of both and the border between Polish and German history of the town. The video is a visual narrative in which the representations of both sculptures — the similarities and relations between them — are juxtaposed with quotes from Ewa Kujawska's book, The House of Małgorzata. Its protagonists are two women, a Pole and a German, who were forced to live in the same house during the post-war resettlement of the German inhabitants of the city.
