For the Nameless (Women) Warriors

performance

Ustka (former Stolpmunde), Poland

The performance took place during the artist-in-residence programme of the Frakcja group of women artists in the Center for Creative Activity in Ustka.

In 1922, the inhabitants of Stolpmünde founded the Monument to the Dying Warrior by Josef Thorak. Initially, the inscription "For our fallen soldiers" was written on the monument. After the war, the inscription was changed to "For the nameless heroes of world wars - Ustka society". The plaque with this inscription has been stolen.

In 2010, thanks to the contributions of Ustka residents, a monument to the Mermaid was erected, the author of which is Michał Rosa. The distance between both monuments is 850 meters and nearly 100 years that passed between the creation of the first and the second - divided by the border between the Polish and German history of the town. The performance took place in the space of these two overlapping worlds.
